Getting a decent and good value haircut in London is harder than you think. You either get butchered for £7.50 or ripped off at £30. After a particularly dodgy and expensive haircut I got on Google and stumbled across Pall Mall Barbers in London.

Lots of great references, good value and central location. It was a no brainer to try them out. 6 months later and I haven't looked back. Ben does a top job of sorting my barnet out each time and the banter between staff and punters is priceless.

It's a no-nonsense, professional service with a glass half-full personality to boot. Try it for yourself.Cheers, Sean

Reviews of Our Barber Shop

18-Feb-2010

just Browsing the internet and found what people are writing about our Barbershop in London.

Since coming to London I have been plagued with overpriced, poor haircuts from "salons". I never once had my hair cut in a way that I felt comfortable with - that is, until I discovered Pall Mall Barbers London a few months ago. I decided to try a vintage style haircut, was pointed their way and was extremely pleased with ...the results - my wife even liked the short faded sides! I have since been back many times - these guys are serious technicians and artists, they know exactly how to cut my hair and have great imagination in creating something a bit different each time. I have no plans to visit anywhere else for my haircuts and hope they stay in business, otherwise Ill be left to the mercy of the salon witches.....Ramon Wodkowski

Just tucked away behind Leicester Square is a great traditional barbers shop, you don't see too many of these about and certainly not in the West End. Only 5 chairs, but worth a visit, really friendly staff who take a pride and care in what they do. They make you feel like a customer! Best to book though.
Only trouble is they listen to Virgin Radio!!!!

Ben has been cutting my hair for years, both at his old shop and now at Pall Mall Barbers. It’s a very relaxed and traditional place, with skilled staff, and no end of witticisms from Ben himself. Very reasonably priced too and close to practically everywhere in the west end. Michael P

Pall Mall Barbers London has been cutting my hair for several years now... First of all they are fantastic barbers, but the traditional touch of the actual barber shop (Pall Mall) is the icing on the cake for me. An overall friendly and old school barber shop, located in a cool area of town. Also offering a great range of products, more importantly - value for money! Get your mop chopped at Pall Mall Barbers in London and see for yourself!

I've been having my haircut at Pall Mall Barbers for the last 2 years and have never been disappointed by their level of expertise and service. They deliver top-end haircuts - at fraction of the cost of their try-hard Soho competitors - in a traditional friendly barber shop environment. Abhay K

Daily Telegraph on our Wet Shaving Wet shaving: the joys of the traditional barber's blade
Wet shaving is enjoying a remarkable renaissance and there is an exquisite luxury to having someone else do all the work.

Razor sharp shaving: PAUL GROVER
"Do you know why a barber's shop always displays a red and white pole in the window?" asks Richard Marshall, proprietor of the Pall Mall Barbers in London. "It signifies blood letting. London Barbers were originally surgeons. In the United States, the poles are red, white and blue representing the vein."

Gulp. I'm about to have my first wet shave courtesy of a traditional barber and am starting to rather miss my little Bic razor at home. It might not be very stylish, but nor is it as threatening as the glinting straight blade, or "throat cutter" as it is known to these follicle swordsmen, advancing towards me.

Wet shaving is enjoying a remarkable renaissance. Cool young dudes no longer use hairdressers, preferring traditional barber shops, where they will be shorn and shaved.

There is, I start to see, an exquisite luxury in having someone do it for you. In the old days, barbers were tiny havens, gentlemen's clubs in all but name, where peers might toddle off for quiet afternoon naps. Now they have morphed into rather snazzy emporia furnished with funky retro kit.

There has also been an increase in sales of straight blades to brave souls who try this at home. A colleague, who has a sinister-sounding German cut-throat complete with leather strap to wipe the blade, describes his shaving ritual, somewhat alarmingly, as his "Sunday morning therapy."

The Pall Mall Barbers (formerly the Pall Mall Toilet Salon) has been on its central London site since 1896, but was recently updated by Marshall. "We have young guys wanting Forties and Fifties haircuts, as well as MPs and actors," he says. "It is that crossover between modern and traditional."

Gentlemen used to visit their barber for a wet shave at least once a week, but until recently this custom had all but disappeared. "Aids killed the traditional barber," says Ben Hardwick, who spends an hour shaving me with extraordinary care for £30. "But since we've had changeable blades it has taken off again."

The choice is limitless for the male grooming enthusiast. Surfing for venues, I was confronted by a photo of a bare-chested chap offering ''back, sack and crack'' treatments "for the guys". No such exoticism in Pall Mall London, even if Hardwick calls me a wet-shave virgin.
As various potions are rubbed into my skin and I'm buried under hot towels (to open the pores) I start to understand the appeal of the wet shave. I like the ritual and the care. Even the shaving cream is warmed, so it feels wonderfully sensual.

Hardwick spends ages brushing in the cream, "getting the bristles up". I'm shaved twice, downward with the grain, then up against the grain with a fresh blade. I'm shaved in reverential silence and this adds to my relaxation. "It probably isn't the best idea to move your Adam's apple with a blade at your jugular," he shrugs later.

He scrapes with painstaking care, rather like a picture restorer removing layer upon layer of grime. "Some barbers don't see anything wrong with giving you a nick, but I'm always very careful," he soothes. The skin is pulled tight to avoid snags, an increasing hazard as our faces deteriorate from the ice-rink smoothness of Macaulay Culkin to the rougher terrain of W H Auden. We finish with cold towels (to close pores) and aftershave.
"Men come in on their wedding day as brides don't want shaving rashes," Hardwick says. "Women love the smoothness." I always assumed that was an advertiser's myth, but feeling my chin I'm amazed. Even I like touching my face. Yet another lesson to be filed under "things you should have known when you were young and single".

"I bet," Hardwick smiles "you haven't felt that smooth since you were 12." I also feel curiously reinvigorated. I suspect barbers are more demonised than demons and visiting one is a little pleasure I heartily recommend.

Last year we had an amazing amount of PR, which just keeps coming though the door

- BBC One, BBC Two, Channel Four, SKY One, Observer Magazine, FHM, GQ and Men’s Health Magazine.

We have also had a strong start to 2010, with the Traveller magazine Korea writing about our Barber shop in London, a live interview with LBC Radio all about Pall Mall Barbers London and our shaving services and finally an article in the Daily Telegraph was the icing on the cake….

It’s such a great feeling to be recognised in this way, and not just locally but globally. I’ve just had an email from a magazine in Mexico, called El Libro Amarillo, who would love to run an article on Pall Mall Barbers London and our history. Amazing!!!

We Love Mo's...Movermber Shaving Offer

05-Nov-2009

• Grow a moustache for Movember
• Cultivate a Mo and raise some cash to fight prostate diseases
• The mysteries of the moustache
• Consider the mystery of the moustache. How does one come into being? And, more importantly, why? It seems many men, usually at a certain paunch-prone age, are struck by a strange and deeply misguided thought: "I know what my face is missing – a slug of fur above the upper lip. That's what I need."

It's a baffling phenomenon. But, while usually the sight of crumb-strewn whiskers wobbling along beside jowly chops is a terrible thing to behold, for the next few weeks, at least, the humble Mo’s becomes very noble.
• Movember
• You see, November – or "Movember" at it has been rechristened – is the month every year in which men around the world grow a moustache to highlight, and raise cash to combat, prostate diseases. Prostate cancer kills one man every hour in Britain and cash is always needed to raise awareness and fund research and development of more effective treatments.

The Mo movement began in Australia in 2003 when just 30 people participated in an attempt to "bring the tache back". Since then, Movember's gone global and has raised over £30 million for prostate cancer charities around the world. In 2008, 173,435 "Mo Bros and Mo Sistas" took part.
• Get involved
• Sound like just the excuse you need to break out some frivolous face fuzz? Well, to participate, all you need to do is get yourself clean-shaven and sign up at movember.com. After registering as a Mo Bro you'll be sent advice on how to raise funds and invited to attend a Gala Parté at the end of Movember to show off your furry efforts.
• Pall Mall Barbers London, Movember!
• Here at Pall Mall Barbers in London will Wet Shave you, and shape your Mo, and take £10 Of the Price, mo trim and wet shave being £20.50

Our Barbers On Channel 4

02-Sep-2009

LOOK OUT FOR 'PALL MALL BARBERS' ON CHANNEL 4 THIS MONTH
Having been approached by the makers of a new documentary for CHANNEL 4, 'Pall Mall Barbers' is due to appear in 'The Boy Who Was Born A Girl' on Friday Sept 4th at 8:00p.m. This is a positive, heart-warming story about a young man by the name of 'John' and focuses on his journey from boy to man, whilst coping with gender 'Dysphoria'. We were filmed giving John a gentleman’s hair cut and wet shave. As a first timer, it seems he found the whole experience, very relaxing and enlightening!!!
'CONDE NAST' PHOTO SHOOT.....ON LOCATION AT 'PALL MALL BARBERS'
It seems we are fast becoming a popular location for both film and editorial shoots. Recently we were asked by the 'Conde Nast' group, if they could use the barbershop as a location for the new 'House of Fraser' autumn menswear collection, campaign. By dressing the shop with 'union jack' bunting and other 1940's props, they brought a quintessentially British feel to the shop, for one morning! They felt it was a very fitting location to reflect this era...and we look forward to seeing the results in 'House of Fraser' stores, up and down the country.
PALL MALL BARBERS….IS GOING GLOBAL!!!
Thanks to joining forces with the shaving company ‘Kamisori Club’ in Japan, ‘Pall Mall Barbers’ is due to be seen all over the world! The ‘Kamisori Club’ have come up with the ingenious idea of publishing a ‘coffee table’ style photo book, after visiting and interviewing barbers in 37 countries around the world. This project is designed to represent a true portrait of barbers in each of these countries, by using photos of barbers at work in their barber shops and interviews with them

27 Whitcomb Street, home to Pall Mall Barbers, an old-style barber shop, which has been there since 1896. It is one of London’s hidden treasures and has at its shop-front the famous red-and-white rotating barber’s pole, which has an interesting history. In ancient Rome, barbers acted not only as shavers and hairdressers but also as surgeons and dentists, treating wounds, bloodletting, leeching and even extracting teeth. In England, barbers were chartered into a guild in 1462 by Edward IV as the Company of Barbers. In 1492, surgeons formed a separate guild and the two came together in 1540 under Henry VIII as the United Barber Surgeon’s Company.

The red-and-white barber’s pole became a symbol of the bloodletting: the white bandages were the clean bandages and the red ones the bloody ones. They would be hung out to dry after washing on the pole, and would blow and twirl together in the wind to form the spiral pattern of the present-day red and white barber’s pole.

Barbers have been featured in literature as well as in operas, such as The Barber of Seville. Barbers have been around for centuries, and they are proud of the fact. Indian hairdressers or hairstylists need not feel humiliated. It is time to restore the ‘Barber’ in Billu and be proud of it.

Olie Arnold - Men's Health

15-Apr-2009

The half-price haircut Olie Arnold, fashion editor of Men's Health magazine, gets a snip at a London barber's.
Olie Arnold The Observer, Sunday 1 March 2009 Article history
Ollie Arnold before and after having his affordable haircut.

I am a creature of habit when it comes to my hair - I entrust my mane to Charles Worthington. For £52 I get one of his protégés to tend to my every need, from a glass of champagne to a head massage. However, as I need a "trim" every two months, the costs spiral out of control. The challenge was to see if I could get the same quality and service for rather less. I found it was possible to get a cut for as little as £6, but I wasn't prepared to let clippers near my mop. A traditional London barber seemed to be my best option. I visited Pall Mall Barbers London(www.pallmallbarbers.com), who have been cutting Londoners' hair for 100 years and would fashion me a new look for £15.50. The cut was very good (they offer more than a short back and sides and Brylcreem), conversation not too intrusive and, most importantly, I saved just over £35. In short, I was able to satisfy my high standards without crippling my wallet - it's just a shame they don't have Moët on tap.

Annual saving: £219
Assuming you get your hair cut six times a year at £52 a visit

Customer Review: Best Barber shop in London

25-Jun-2008

A review of my experience at Pall Mall Barbers last week and so
here it is:

Absolute rubbish do not go there!

Only kidding. Pall Mall Barbers is a traditional little barber shop in the West End of London. The staff were friendly and welcoming and I didn't once feel as though conversation was forced the way it often is at many hair stylists.

I got exactly what I asked for which was a very neat, classic cut. I am afraid I cannot remember the name of the chat who cut my hair, but he took his time and I felt comfortable letting him make suggestions and in the end was very pleased with his work. I think, with my hair, the test of a great cut will be how it grows out, but I suspect I will have no disappointments there either.

It cost me twice as much as my local barbers', but they took at least twice as long and way more than double the care and attention.

At this stage I can highly recommend their services and will certainly be going back again.

Jonny

Cut the music ... Sweeney Todd

I can't say I'd use this film as a training video. Slitting your customers' throats isn't a good business model - you wouldn't get many repeat customers. I don't think I would employ Johnny Depp's Sweeney Todd, either. He looks like a bit of a madman.
I loved the scenes of Victorian London in Tim Burton's movie; and it was great to see the old barber shops with the traditional red and white barber's pole. The red represents blood and the white represents bandages. Years ago, barbers were also surgeons. They would pull teeth and perform bloodletting, so they were no strangers to gore. But I don't think many of them went as far as Sweeney.
Sweeney's razors look more like samurai swords than professional tools. They were obviously made to scare. I've never come across a set of razors of that scale and shape. The traditional shave using a straight razor and strop - a piece of leather used to sharpen the razor - are things of the past now. We use a disposable safety blade for hygiene reasons.
Lathering and preparation is the key to good shaving. Sweeney doesn't apply the soap properly. He brushes it across the face when what you should do is work it in to the skin, softening the stubble and bringing up the bristles. You don't often see Johnny Depp actually shaving a customer - it looked as if they might have used someone else's hands to do the work.

I wasn't sure what to make of the music. Obviously, there's a connection between singing and barber shops - think of barber shop quartets - but I suspect my clientele would be relieved that we don't serenade them while we work. They wouldn't want to hear my voice, anyway.
