Movember Tips

Movember has been going for the past decade and a half, with men all over the world nurturing moustaches for a worthy cause. Movember is an annual event involving the growing of moustache during November to raise awareness of men’s health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men’s suicide. Starting in Australia with just thirty men, it has grown over the years and is now a global event, with thousands of men growing moustaches each year to raise money. Whether you’re growing your ‘tache for charity, fashion, or competitive sport, Pall Mall Barbers have some Movember tips from our barbers to guide you through the process.

“Our friends, fathers, brothers, and partners are facing a health crisis, yet it’s rarely talked about. Men are dying too young. We can’t afford to stay silent.”

Make a Plan

No two moustaches are alike. If you’re looking to grow something adventurous like a chevron moustache, be mindful of that when you start shaping it and plan the products you will need to keep groomed. First, choose your style. If you’re completely out of ideas, the Movember website has a handy guide for your perusal. For those who want to do it by the book, consider one of the six official judging categories in the World Beard and Moustache Championships.

Moustache Styles You Will Want to Try

  • Dali Moustache.
  • Pencil Moustache.
  • Handlebar Moustache.
  • Chevron Moustache
  • Walrus Moustache.
  • Horseshoe Moustache.
  • Cowboy Moustache.
  • Fu Manchu Moustache.

Start Strong with a Good Shave

The rules of Movember require that you start with a clean-shaved face. If you choose to do the Movember challenge, you’ll need a good razor, plus the right Shave Cream and Post Shave Balm. If you have sensitive skin, we suggest using Shave Oil, which softens stubble while defending sensitive skin, followed with Cooling Gel, to reduce the impact of razor burn and irritation.

MOVEMBER SHAVES, we got you covered to start Mo, right!

If you’re feeling like treating yourself or aren’t confident at wet shaving (maybe you’ve been wearing a beard for years?), start with the Pall Mall Barbers Luxury Wet Shave – we’re known for giving the best shaves in the business. And we know our customers are delighted with the results.

We start with our Pre-Shave Scrub used before shaving; the Amazonian guarana seeds will remove any dead skin cells or flakiness and prepare your skin by opening the pores and helping to lift hairs away from the face.

Followed by our Shave Cream, the product of choice for countless professional barbers. Suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin.

The last stage is followed by our professional Post-Shave Balm, which contains glycerin to smooth away any rough or dry patches, leaving your skin soft and refreshed.

We often finish a wet shave with our amazing Beard Oil for extra moisture and to help the skin recover – it’s a blend of jojoba and sweet almond oils enriched with skin-softening vitamin E, also perfect for keeping your facial hair looking and smelling great.

This service is available to book at any of our 6 London barbershops and in Birmingham.

Maintain, Maintain, Maintain

Next for our moustache grooming tips, assemble your tools. At the very least, you will need some electric clippers, a razor, a fine-toothed comb, and Shave Cream. True devotees of moustache craft would also add barber’s scissors to the list, but that takes a steady hand and the confidence of a seasoned pro, so skip them if it’s your first time. If you’re planning a Dali or some other surrealist formation, you’ll also need a tin of moustache wax.

Growing out a moustache

You’ll want to keep an eye on growth – shape it every day and use grooming products for any itches or irritation. We’ve already given you a rundown of the products you need to do that, but here’s one thing you may not have considered. Now that any facial hair is gone from your cheeks and chin, you’ll want to pay extra attention to that newly exposed skin: moisturising is an essential part of the maintenance. Make sure you nurture your moustache and keep it clean.

You can either allow your Mo to grow out and style it using Moustache wax to style away any stray hairs or if you are opting for a shorter style, keep the Moustache the appropriate length by trimming with scissors every two weeks (or as and when you get stray Mo hairs!)

Finally, assess your results. How was it for you? If it’s a thumbs down, time to call in the professionals and book a luxury wet shave with one of our expert barbers. You’ve earned it.
